Internet can be a great tool for learners. It is full of educational resources that are beneficial for students and parents alike. However, this powerful tool is also prone to misuse, exposing gullible youngsters to unforeseen harms. As we are discovering about the multifaceted harms of the internet, internet safety is only becoming a more pressing need.

Sisimpur Bangladesh had organizing a workshop to review the Teachers Training Module, particularly on how the module can best incorporate internet safety protocols. This fruitful session centered around reviewing the module’s effectiveness for training teachers on internet safety, raising awareness for students and parents, and teachers sharing their challenges and improvement scopes for the module.

The workshop elaborated on five action plans, with internet safety being the central theme. The goal of the workshop was to collect insights from teachers to enhance the internet safety module. This module will in turn equip teachers with the right training to raise internet safety awareness while promoting best practices amongst parents and students. Moreover, the session identified many online safety tools for teachers and parents.

Safety measures does not limit the internet’s uses; rather they help us make the most of this powerful tool. Building on this paradigm, experts elaborated on the real-world risks of internet and the measures that teachers and parents can take. At the same time, teachers shared their challenges and suggestions for safe Internet practices. Their valuable insights will further help refine the training module, incorporating actionable measures to ensure internet safety.

The workshop helped identify several challenges. Among them was addressing the importance of adult supervision during internet use for children. Challenges in training implementation was also discussed, particularly, the need for presenting complex internet safety concepts in an easily-understandable form. Experts and teachers also recommended incorporating practical examples and engaging materials for a better learning outcomes. Lastly, the need for a balanced approach that involves both students and parents was underscored.

Following the workshop’s success, the project will proceed with further action plans. After incorporating teachers’ feedbacks, and getting the review from Directorate of Primary Education, the module will be set for digitization for training purposes. The online module will be available for select teachers and trainers to enhance their digital capacity and promote safe internet practices for all, in line with Sisimpur’s guidance.

The workshop was a significant step towards improving internet safety education, first for teachers and eventually for parents and students. By leveraging the feedback and expertise of teachers, Sisimpur Bangladesh is set to enhance their training module to empower teachers with the knowledge on safe internet practices and ultimately raise awareness amongst parents and learners.
