And it happened! Riseup Labs’ first Gamescom Asia exhibition was a tremendous success. In its international exhibition series, Gamescom Asia 2024 held a special appeal for Riseup Labs by bringing the global gaming world closer to home, right in the heart of Asia. Moreover, 2024 marked the much-anticipated return of the event, with record numbers of visitors, exhibitors, and speakers from the gaming industry. The Riseup Labs team is here to share their experiences and highlights from the fourth edition of Asia’s biggest game show, Gamescom Asia.
Gamescom Asia 2024’s Record-breaking Return
Held in Suntec Singapore Convention & Exhibition Centre from 17th-20th October, Gamescom Asia returned with a bang in its fourth edition, a much-awaited moment for the organizers since its inauguration in 2021 during Covid. Hosting over 41,000 visitors and 177 exhibitors, the event recorded a sharp increase from all previous years, making it especially exciting for Riseup Labs.
This premier platform gathers major industry players while casting a spotlight on Asian game studios and developers. This year was no different! The 2024’s edition of Gamescom Asia featured gaming industry titans like ex-PlayStation Worldwide Studios Chairman Shawn Layden, Gordon Van Dyke (Raw Fury), Justin Scarpone (SEGA), Jaeho Hwang (MINTROCKET), and more. Through presentations and speeches, they offered various perspectives and insider insights on game developments, business strategies and the secrets behind global hits.
PlayStation Worldwide’s former chairman Shawn Layden took a strong stance while voicing his support for unique and creative games. Praising the smaller, lesser-known game developers who are constantly bringing new innovative ideas to the table, he said these powerful words:
If we can just get a bit more interest and excitement and exposure for these lower budget, but super creative and super unusual kind of games, I would like to see more of that. Because if we’re just going to rely on the blockbusters to get us through, I think that’s a death sentence for the [gaming] business.
Shawn Layden, Former Chairman of Sony Interactive Entertainment (SIE) Studios
Business Area Hosts The Industry Roundtables
Gamescom Asia has two segments under its wings which are the Business Area and the Entertainment Area. Exclusive to industry personnels, Business Area means all things business. From international exhibitions and conferences to roundtable dialogues, one-on-ones, invest circles, and pitch contests, the arena buzzed with activity and opportunities. Moreover, the 2024 edition of Business Area saw a steep rise in international exhibitors, drawing companies from Japan, the Philippines, Singapore, Spain, Thailand, the US, and beyond. Bangladesh also joined the list with Riseup Labs.
More on the conference, over 80 industry experts delivered in-depth analysis on game design and development, business and marketing strategies, and even the behind-the-scenes of bestsellers. As in the case of Matthieu Youna of MyDearest talking about the journey of the indie hit The Exit 8 into a VR bestseller.
Similarly, a palpable energy coursed through the Invest Circles over 200 professionals speculated on the next big development in gaming. These industry professionals and top speakers are actively eyeing the fast-growing and lucrative South Asian game market. Over 4,400 business visitors participated in the two-day Business Area, immersing themselves in business matching, networking, and knowledge-sharing activities.
Gamers Step into an Unforgettable Experience in the Entertainment Area
The “Entertainment Area” unveiled an unforgettable gaming showcase and experiences for fans and the general public with its main stage events, gameplays, cosplays, meet-and-greets, and much more. A key highlight was CAPCOM’s grand return in a massive 1,000 sqm booth. The star attraction thrilled fans with live gameplay of a high-stakes Street Fighter 6 match, where the winner took home $10,000 in prize money and entry into the global CAPCOM Cup 11. Fans were also teased with a first-hand play session of Monster Hunter Wilds with none other than Ryozo Tsujimoto, the game’s producer, leaving them eager for its release.
The Entertainment Area importantly brought to the limelight the lesser-known indie studios and developers, as fans set out to explore fresh new games on the market. Moreover, this year’s “indie area” featured 60 promising titles from independent game developers worldwide.
