Overview

Bangladesh meets its international climate reporting obligations through a Measuring, Reporting, and Verification (MRV) system. The Food and Agriculture Organization (FAO) of the United Nations collaborated with the Department of Environment (DoE), and the Ministry of Environment, Forest, and Climate Change (MoEFCC) to develop the system. The initial iteration however lacked important features like up-to-date greenhouse gas (GHG) emission data. There was also the need to improve user accessibility and ensure compliance with the Biennial Transparency Reporting (BTR).

FAO selected Riseup Labs to upgrade the web-based GHG MRV system. The company therefore helped streamline data management, visualization, and reporting. Additionally, Riseup Labs focused on making it a robust tool for transparent and accurate climate action tracking.

The Challenge

The primary challenge was to enhance the MRV system’s functionality while maintaining efficiency, accessibility, and compliance with international standards.

The key challenges included:

  • Integration of updated GHG data featuring time series emission data, factors, and total emissions.
  • Data visualization and usability features with seamless filter, download, and interaction along with metadata and statistical insights.
  • Compatibility with BTR requirements.
  • Robust back-end and security with fault-tolerant systems, administrative control, and low-latency performance.
  • Performance optimization while managing large datasets with responsiveness.

The Solution

Riseup Labs implemented a systematic approach to address the challenges through front-end development, back-end optimization, and seamless data integration.
